What Is The Difference Between IELTS General And IELTS Academic?

You must have heard of the IELTS exam, but do you know which one applies to your specific needs? Let us take a closer look at the classification and how the entire process operates.

What is IELTS?

IELTS, or The International English Testing System, is created specifically to examine a person's English language proficiency. The proficiency is tested based on four factors-

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

This International Standardized Test of English language proficiency is created for non-native speakers, especially for migration ( for study, work and more) to a country where English is the native language.

Different Types of IELTS

Depending on why you are migrating, the English speaking requirement may differ, which is why IELTS tests are separated into two categories:

  • IELTS Academic
  • IELTS General Training

Now, what is the difference between these two and which one do you need? It all depends on why you are moving abroad. The two main reasons for which people travel abroad are mainly for education or work. Therefore if you are travelling for study, you will need to prepare for the academic version; if it is for work and other purposes, general training shall suffice. The test score is valid for up to two years of completion.

IELTS Academic vs General Training - Which Exam Is Right For You?

IELTS Academic

If you want to study abroad in an English-speaking country, then taking the IELTS Academic is crucial. Several universities accept this test and colleges and organisations in different countries. Numerous of the world’s most reputed institutions recognise the band scores as concrete proof of your English abilities. It is especially mandatory in most European and Australian universities, with dialect being the only variation. IELTS will be required and accepted if you want to enter undergraduate, postgraduate or further studies.

IELTS General Training

Several students move abroad before degree-level education, such as for high school and senior secondary education. For those individuals, taking an IELTS General Training does suffice. Professionals who must display working level fluency can also take this test.

Countries that Accept the Score of IELTS

IELTS as a whole is widely accepted around the world. This test validates your English abilities in more than 100,000 educational institutions, immigration offices, organisations, and corporations in approximately 140 countries.

Major countries that recognise the IELTS test results are as follows:

Canada

In most Canadian educational institutions and organisations, IELTS test scores are accepted. If any student intends to shift to Canada form of residency, such as to work, study or live there, they are required to appear for this exam. They will also need to score a minimum of six in band score in all the sections.

USA

Approximately 3,000 or more USA institutions consider the IELTS test valid. The band score requirements may vary depending on the institution, but the minimum score will likely be 6.  Although you want an easy visa process, you must score higher on the IELTS test.

Australia

Similar to other countries, the immigration office of Australia and most educational institutions accept the IELTS score. The minimum band score that must be attained is 6.

Which IELTS Should You Take?

If you still have not figured out which IELTS exam you are taking, let us simplify the process. You must opt for IELTS Academic if your goal is:

  • Undergraduate Studies
  • Postgraduate Studies
  • Doctorate Studies
  • Post-Doctoral Studies
  • Professional Organisation

You need to opt for IELTS General Training if your goal is:

  • Below Degree Level Studies
  • Work or trainin
  • Migration
  • Permanent Residency

Similarities and Differences Explained

Allow us to explain the fundamental differences between the IELTS Academic vs. General Training. Both the IELTS exams contain four main sections that you need to ace:

  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Listening
  • Speaking

As for similarity, the IELTS Listening and Speaking section will remain the same regardless of the type of IELTS Exam you choose to sit for. There are three modules for Speaking and four for Listening for all students.

The difference comes in at the IELTS Reading and Writing Portion. The Academic test topics in these sections are university or professional university appropriate and tend to be a bit more difficult and advanced. On the other hand, General training will contain topics that are more on the general test level, which will apply to a wide variety of people.
